Woodstock Writers Festival
Woodstock Writers Festival

The Woodstock Writers Festival began in 2010, when a group of writers got together with the former owner of Woodstock’s independent bookstore, The Golden Notebook, and graphic designer Ken Schneidman, and thought:

Why don’t we put on a show? We can invite our friends and the writers whose work we admire, and bring readers from around the country to hear them, against the backdrop of the gorgeous Catskill Mountains.

Over the next few years, the festival has hosted Pulitzer winners, Man Booker Prize winner, crowd favorites  and world renowned artists.

Come along for the read, won’t you?

Woodstock Comedy Festival
Woodstock Comedy Festival

The Woodstock Comedy Festival is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation with a mission: Comedy for a Cause. Each year our net profits will be donated to our charity partnersPolaris and Family of Woodstock for the battle against human trafficking and domestic violence. Our second-annual festival is a three-day weekend event (Sept. 19-21) in the little town with a lot to laugh at, with everything from stand-up comedy to sketch comedy, improv to panels, films and more.

The WCF was founded in 2011 by Chris Collins, a semi-retired psych professor who believes in a good laugh and a good cause. Either that or he had nothing better to do other than enlist the aid of the funniest people around to spread laughter in the town of Woodstock, while gaining some good karma — always popular in Woodstock. Chris and his team of modestly attractive producers will make the Woodstock Comedy Festival a good time (for good causes) this year, and for many years to come.

Upstate Films
Upstate Films

Since 1972, Upstate has demonstrated a commitment to film as a medium of social communication and aesthetic experience. Its programming, in Rhinebeck since the beginning and in Woodstock since Feb 2010,  is an eclectic mix which, in the course of any particular year, focuses on themes, issues, regions. Frequently, Upstate brings films (e.g., Souleymane Cisse's Brightness or Raul Ruiz' Life Is a Dream) which are rarely screened in this country, much less in a semi-rural area.

Without the benefit of an endowment, and with a modest budget, Upstate's pursued audience development in a number of ways: By interpreting "development" not as a euphemism for marketing, but as intellectual development; and by "contextualizing" film, placing film in a larger, richer context, connected to the rest of society and culture.

Opus 40 Sculpture Park and Museum
Opus 40 Sculpture Park and Museum

In 1938, Harvey Fite, one of the founders of the Bard College Fine Arts Department, purchased an abandoned quarry in the town of Saugerties, NY, in Ulster County, about 100 miles north of New York City.

During a period of 37 years he created the monumental world-acclaimed 6½-acre bluestone sculpture now known as Opus 40. Over time he acquired additional land (70+ acres today) and built several structures, including a beautiful large wood home, a studio, garage, blacksmith shop and the Quarryman’s Museum, home of his unique collection of historic quarrying tools.
Constructed by this one man, using dry-key stone techniques adapted from the Mayans, Opus 40 is made from millions of pieces of indigenous bluestone, laid by hand, creating a labyrinthine world of finely fitted stone, swirling with ramps and terraces constructed around pools and trees and fountains, rising out of bedrock a half mile deep.
